Liberating left hand

While drawing with my left hand this morning, I realized that it had a liberating effect on me. Maybe being less demanding for the final result because, after all they were drawn with the left hand. I like these drawings, a bit awkward , may I say gauche, they touch me. The 2nd portrait made with my dominant hand don’t have the same effect on me. It is very simple, I have to draw with my right hand fooling my mind in letting it think it is my left hand.

En dessinant de la main gauche ce matin, je me suis rendue compte que c’était trés libérateur. Ne pas trop attendre du résultat final, je dessinais de la main gauche après tout. J’aime beaucoup ces dessins, un peu maladroit, on peut même dire un peu gauche, mais ils me touchent. Le 2e portrait fait de ma main droite dominante n’a pas cet effet sur moi.  Alors c’est très simple, je dois dessiner de la main droite en laissant croire à mon esprit que c’est ma main gauche.

Mirror image, memory image

A new attempt for a self portrait, the double reflection. The set-up is longer, and a little more tricky but the result is different, and it is interesting to be able to draw my own profile. I have already linked to Aletha’s explanation of the double reflection portrait, but she does it much better than me, portrait and explanation.

Encore un auto-portrait mais un peu différent puisque fait avec la double réflection. L’installation est un peu plus longue et délicate mais le résultat est différent et c’est interessant de pouvoir me dessiner de profil. J’ai deja fait référence à l’explication de Aletha sur cette méthode du double miroir mais elle explique et dessine mieux que moi.

Sumi-e, no.2

When I  talked about my sumi-e experience, I got interesting comments. And it made me realize what I like in a drawing, what I am looking for. I like contrast, I like unusual composition, and it is what attracted me to the Japanese paintings I copied. Copying is a very good exercise, but can be hard for the moral and make me humble. The top three inks are my version of Sumi-e, the other three are copied from masters.

Quand j’ai parlé de mes essais en Sumi-e, j’ai eu des commentaires interessants qui m’ont permis de mieux saisir ce que j’aime et recherche dans le dessin: le contraste et une mise en page inhabituelle. C’est ce qui m’a attiré dans les peintures japonaises que je recopiais. Recopier est un trés bon exercice, un peu dur pour le moral et qui rend humble. Les trois encres du haut sont ma version du sumi-e, les trois autres sont recopiés de maitres .

Mini croquis sur mini écran.  Ce que j’aime le plus quand je dessine sur mon ipod touch c’est de pouvoir utiliser la couleur si facilement.

From the paper version I played with colors and contrast in the computer with photoshop. Changing the colors, changing the mood.

De la version papier, j’ai joué avec le contraste et les couleurs dans l’ordinateur avec photoshop. Changez les couleurs, changez l’ambiance.

Looking in the mirror

Self portrait can  look like a narcissic obsession but it is just a very handy way of practising. Where can I find a model always there, patient and with no expectation for the end result? The problem with the mirror technique is that hypnotic look of the eyes and also the fact that everything is reverse, which I never realized before reading Aletha  here

L’auto-portrait peut sembler être une obsession narcissique mais en fait ce n’est que la facilité d’avoir un modèle sous la main, toujours prêt, patient et sans attentes. Avec la technique du miroir, par contre, il y a toujours ce regard hypnotisé  et aussi le fait que tout est inversé, chose que je n’avais jamais réalisé avant de lire Aletha ici

The first looks at Twitter were to me like a secret code for insiders. One line of commentslinksinfos.  Instantaneous and volatile.  Fast, fun, interesting… but for me? Then, from  ” instant” and “volatile”  the idea of a volatile instant in art came to me as ephemeral art. Drawing on something or with something that will not stay, take a picture as a reminder of the instant, post it on TwitPic.  Anyone interested in joining me in twittering ephemeral art? Twitter, apres mes premières visites me semblait être un code secret pour  initiés. Une ligne  d’infoslienscommentaires. Instantané  et volatil. Rapide, marrant, interessant…mais pour moi? De cette impression d’instant et de volatilité est apparue l’idée d’un instant volatil en art, l’art éphémère. Dessiner sur quelquechose ou avec quelquechose qui ne reste pas, seul la photo rapelle ce moment et la poster sur TwitPic. Des amateurs? Laissez moi savoir.                               Merci beaucoup a Aaron, du bamboo raft, pour ses encouragements et son aide, so “I can do it!” enfin…j’essaie.
