Childhood

Childhood was the October theme for il studio . French and Belgian comic book characters. From left to right: Babar, Obelix, Asterix, Gaston’s laughing seagull, Tintin, Capitaine Hadock, Gaston (sleeping), Lucky Luke (with no cigarette as per the law asked), Jolly Jumper (the horse), le petit Nicolas, Rantanplan , Gaston’s cat, Bill (the dog), Boule (the little boy) and Milou (Snowy). I still read them with pleasure.

Enfance, le thème d’octobre au studio. Si vous ne les reconnaissez , de gauche a droite, Babar, obelix, Asterix, la mouette rieuse de Gaston, Tintin, Capitaine Hadock, Gaston faisant la sieste, Lucky Luke sans sa cigarette tel que demandé par la loi, Jolly Jumper son fidèle compagnon, Le petit Nicolas, Rantanplan, le chat de Gaston, Bill le cocker, Boule et Milou. Je les lis encore avec plaisir.

Under my bed

under my bed

Under my bed is a crowdy place. When I was small, it was of course full of monsters, then my cats chase them while napping, then my dog chase them, then my boys chase them . Now it is empty.

Sous mon lit il y a foule. Quand j’étais petite, c’était bien sur bourré de monstres, puis mes chats les ont fait fuir en y faisant la sieste, puis mon chien les a fait fuir, puis mes fistons les ont fait fuir. Et maintenant c’est vide.

J’en suis a peu près à la moitié de mon carnet des chats, quelques chats n’arrivent pas jusqu’au blog.

La nuit, tous les chats sont gris.

” At night, all cats are grey” . There must be an equivalent in English, Spanish, Italian…

Sumi-e, no.2

When I  talked about my sumi-e experience, I got interesting comments. And it made me realize what I like in a drawing, what I am looking for. I like contrast, I like unusual composition, and it is what attracted me to the Japanese paintings I copied. Copying is a very good exercise, but can be hard for the moral and make me humble. The top three inks are my version of Sumi-e, the other three are copied from masters.

Quand j’ai parlé de mes essais en Sumi-e, j’ai eu des commentaires interessants qui m’ont permis de mieux saisir ce que j’aime et recherche dans le dessin: le contraste et une mise en page inhabituelle. C’est ce qui m’a attiré dans les peintures japonaises que je recopiais. Recopier est un trés bon exercice, un peu dur pour le moral et qui rend humble. Les trois encres du haut sont ma version du sumi-e, les trois autres sont recopiés de maitres .

Drawn with the left hand.   Dessinés de la main gauche.

Why bother drawing with the left hand, when it is so hard doing it with the right one?  It brings me back to the basics, having the hand follow the eye, in a reflex mode. Sometimes the eye is surprise to see the hand going elsewhere.

Pourquoi se compliquer la vie en dessinant de la main gauche? Cela me remets en mémoire les bases: la main doit suivre l’oeil, comme dans un réflexe. Et quelquefois l’oeil est surpris de voir la main partir d’un tout autre coté.

I have copied this last one from Dubout’s cat drawings. I liked the use of these simple black  lines.

Drawing these cats   give me a regular drawing time  and a fun time too. So far this one is the winner and made it to the top.

Dessiner ces chats me donnent du temps de dessin regulier et amusant. Et voici le gagnant, pour le moment, il m’a tellement plu qu’il est en haut de l’échelle.
